Seaton Hall

An ancient Farm House successively rebuilt from 1480 onwards on the site of a Saxon manor house mentioned in the Domesday survey. The house was occupied by the de Seton family from 1100 to 1307, then became a dower house to the Mulgrave estate and the de Mauley family, and via inheritance to Sir Francis Bigod, who was born in the house in 1507, whose father and uncle were killed at the Battle of Flodden in North Yorkshire fighting on the King's side. The young Sir Francis was made a ward of Cardinal Wolsey, was educated at Oxford, and went on to become a leader of the Pilgrimage of Grace, and for his part in this he was then executed.

His brother, Ralph, lived on at Seaton Hall until 1548. The estate then passed through various lines, and subsequently went to the Dukes of Buckingham, and the laws of Seaton Manorial Court survive on a vellum roll from this period.

There is much correspondence from Sir Francis in public records, one letter of which relates to his house complaining of it's poor status, ill fitting a man of gentle birth.

The house was then relegated in status to that of a tenant farm, until the current owners purchased the property and farm, thus becoming the first owner-occupiers since 1548.

Works are ongoing to restore the house to its former manorial status. Now offering comfortable accommodation based on 6 double bedrooms with 5 bathrooms, drawing room, dining room, further dining/kitchen room, separate original kitchen and domestic offices. The property is south facing, set in it’s own 70 acre mini estate, offering privacy and tranquility, with rural walks through parkland, woodland, and seaside cliff top walking nearby.

Ample parking next to the house offers easy unloading. The house is centrally heated and all character has been retained. It is furnished with many pieces of antique furniture and paintings, but with modern plumbing, mattresses and other conveniences. The kitchen has full cooking facilities with a fridge and freezer in the utility room, complete with the latest washing and drying machines. Cot and child facilities are available upon request. Satellite and other TV’s are installed. All fuel, heating and lighting is included, as are bed linen and towels.
